BIZ Exam: Scope and Format
Overview
- What you’ll learn: The scope, format, and scoring of the BIZ certification exam, what topics are in scope, what time allocation to use, and how to approach the exam strategically.
- Estimated reading time: 10 minutes
Introduction
The Grand Historian, who has observed many examinations in many traditions, offers this assessment: the BIZ certification exam is not a test of whether you have memorized Inamori’s texts. It is a test of whether you can apply the principles of amoeba management to realistic organizational situations — with enough calculation fluency to handle the quantitative elements without a calculator becoming a cognitive crutch, and enough philosophical depth to address the case-based questions with specificity rather than generality.
The exam covers Modules 2 through 11 of this track. Module 1 (Amoeba Foundations) is assessed implicitly — the foundational concepts appear in every section without being tested as a standalone category. Module 12 (this module) is preparation, not content. The exam does not ask you to describe what amoeba management is. It asks you to use it.
Exam Structure
- Duration: 90 minutes.
- Format: 20 questions total. 8 calculation questions (40% of score), 12 philosophy/case questions (60% of score).
- Passing score: 75 out of 100. Each question is weighted by its marked point value.
- Calculation questions (8): Drawn from Modules 4 (Time Accounting), 8 (Compensation Design), and 9 (Bonus & Equity). Expect unit time profit calculations, bonus pool sizing, KPI formula application, and vesting schedule analysis. All calculation questions have deterministic correct answers — partial credit is awarded for correct method with arithmetic error.
- Philosophy/case questions (12): Drawn from Modules 2 (Twelve Rules), 3 (Amoeba Design), 5 (Managerial Accounting), 6 (Leadership), 7 (Talent), 10 (Culture), and 11 (Cases). These questions present a scenario and ask you to diagnose, prescribe, or evaluate using specific Inamori/Morita/Hu Baiyi frameworks. Generic answers without framework application receive partial credit at best.
Time Allocation Strategy
- Calculation questions: Allocate 3–5 minutes each. Do all calculation questions first if possible — they have definitive answers and reward careful arithmetic over speed.
- Philosophy/case questions: Allocate 4–6 minutes each. Identify which framework the question is testing in the first 30 seconds. Name the framework explicitly in your answer. Apply it to the specific details of the scenario provided — do not answer generically.
- Review: Reserve 10 minutes at the end for checking calculation answers and adding specificity to any philosophy answers that feel generic.
Common Exam Mistakes
- Answering philosophy questions with general statements about Inamori’s philosophy without applying them to the specific scenario.
- Failing to show calculation steps — partial credit requires visible method, not just a final number.
- Spending too long on hard calculation questions at the expense of easier philosophy questions.
- Confusing module frameworks — applying the talent framework to a compensation question, or the culture framework to an org design question.
Key Takeaways
- BIZ exam: 90 minutes, 20 questions, 40% calculation, 60% philosophy/case, passing score 75.
- Calculation questions: unit time profit, bonus pool, KPI formulas, vesting schedules.
- Philosophy questions: always name the specific framework, always apply to the scenario’s specific details.
- Do calculations first. Reserve 10 minutes for review.
