Introduction

The Grand Historian notes that the twelve management rules are not twelve separate ideas. They form an integrated philosophy in which each rule supports the others. The exam tests whether you understand the architecture of the system — how Rule 5 (maximize revenue, minimize expenses) connects to Rule 6 (pricing is management) and to Rule 7 (success is determined by willpower) — not whether you can recite the rules in order. High-scoring answers on philosophy exam questions demonstrate this integration by applying multiple rules simultaneously to a single scenario.

Rules 1–4: The Foundation (Purpose, Goals, Passion, Effort)

These four rules establish the motivational and directional foundation. Exam question pattern: “A team lacks clarity about its direction / a leader lacks enthusiasm / performance is declining.” The answer should diagnose which of rules 1–4 is violated and propose a specific corrective action. Generic answer: “The leader should inspire the team.” High-scoring answer: “The team lacks a clearly stated purpose and specific goals (Rules 1 and 2). The leader should convene a goal-setting session, produce a written purpose statement and 90-day goals, and model passionate commitment to those goals in daily behavior (Rule 3).”

Rules 5–6: The Economic Core (Revenue/Expense, Pricing)

These two rules are the most calculation-adjacent in the philosophy section. Rule 5 (maximize revenue, minimize expenses) is tested through scenarios where a unit is underperforming — does the candidate identify which side of the equation is the problem? Rule 6 (pricing is management) is tested through scenarios where a company is pricing below cost or pricing without strategic rationale. High-scoring answers for Rule 6 always reference the specific pricing calculation and the principle that price must exceed cost before it can be called management.

Rules 7–9: The Will (Willpower, Fighting Spirit, Courage)

These three rules address the non-rational dimensions of performance — the will to continue when data argues for retreat. Exam question pattern: “A project is behind schedule / a new market entry is failing / a team is demoralized.” The answer should distinguish between situations that warrant persistence (rules 7–9 apply) and situations that warrant strategic retreat (data-driven pivot). The rules do not mean “never quit.” They mean “do not quit before the rational case for quitting is established.”

Rules 10–12: The Character (Creativity, Kindness, Positivity)

These three rules are most frequently tested in culture and leadership questions. Rule 10 (always be creative) appears in questions about organizational learning and continuous improvement. Rules 11 and 12 (kindness and positivity) appear in questions about leadership behavior, team culture, and how to respond to failure without demoralizing the team. High-scoring answers reference specific behaviors that embody these rules, not abstract character qualities.

Key Takeaways

  • The 12 rules form an integrated system. Apply multiple rules simultaneously to exam scenarios.
  • Rules 1–4: foundation. Rules 5–6: economic core. Rules 7–9: will. Rules 10–12: character.
  • High-scoring answers are specific — they name the rule, explain its application to the specific scenario, and propose concrete actions.
  • Rules 7–9 do not mean “never quit.” They mean “do not quit before the rational case for quitting is established.”
